Project:what-is-peaceProject:what-is-peace
What is peace? is a Cultural_Fusion inspired SoulFood:Meal that is cooked and shared in the SoulFood tradition.
GenesisOffspringA tangent that turned into a Project:stek-jes
What is peace?
Dedication
BREATHE
MissionSo this Project will be one that explores the path(s) to peace with ourselves and in our Source:Relationships to each other, history, truth, justice, the present, the planet, Comfusion: all the plants and trees waiting to be discoverd as we gather ingredients for the SoulFood:Dishes for this SoulFood:Banquet called what-is-peace?. When this is normalized, a world at war ceases to be an option.
In my experience, the path to peace starts with an end to abuse and victimization and because i can only control me that is where this quest for peace begins. It may not be an easy task, but just as i was about to embark i was reminded that i am not alone...and this Project will remind others that they are not alone. i also hope that it helps others in their exploration and understanding of what peace is so that some day no one will be afraid to commit to--invest in-- Peace.
Synchronistic InspirationRon sent me the song \"From a Distance\" at the right time and it has provided sustained inspiration that reaches in and connects me immediately with why i had to do this Project. I can't mention this song and not include a link to Julie Gold's Grammy acceptance because it is a moment that still moves me to tears for too many reasons. Update: 10-28-08I have thought several times to add this, but I do it this time. I felt she expresses what it is to see our inner conflict - I pray/work for peace and I love the soliders. I have a funny little cartoon we came up with from the time when this first came to me. That must have been a year or more ago. I will add for this later.
What can I do? I can apply my Ingredients (Art, Ideas, Time, Attention, Love/Passion, Breath (life force), JOY, etc) to developing the recipe(s) and prototypes of the ULTIMATE ANSWER. What I have learned is that my speciality is integrating the needs and resources of all keystake holders. Not an easy task when approaching and idea like how to express the questions in a way that makes infinite space for others based on Radical Inclusion. In addion, I found the reward is Source:Passion- Passion is the desire to find out about an aspect of yourself that you can fall in love with.
I touched on it ever so slightly in the Oci Novosti essay I did on romantic ideals/sexuality and their political expression. I have a series on this brewing in my head for about five years now, so may the time is coming where I will be ready to express that one. That is not today.
Oh, and in case you don't know the words, here's a link to the lyrics at Nanci Griffith's site, she recorded the song before Bette Middler. I "discovered" Nancy back in the late '80's when I worked in little music/video store. It was/is one of the last of the independently owned music stores in that town.
Update and Note to self:
Connection to unnpublished article on relationship as energy transcaction--->Ron's PoD-->ID change space<--? I feel this is an art series that emerges as a stek jes to this project<---Elvis Costello essay<--Right to think as sexual liberation<-- essays I have not written about the rewards of creative passion, SoulFood/CF as CRM Strategy, and Attention:Alone relationship to Personal Fabrication as an Industry.
The first Project exploring this question begins with a dialogue about the lessons on the path to peace from friendship as a Source:Collaboration between Humanity:Yvette_Dubel and Humanity:Irena_Gapkovska. That dialogue is at the end of this page and will be integrated into a digital or internet Art:Work as part of a multimedia installation.
This was followed by a similar SoulFood:Dish inspired by my Aunt Yvette and the culmination of many years of influence and dialogues... in as much as i feel inspired by my auntie, i also see the many ways that my Grandma Lottie, my Mom, Yvette_Dubel:Cousin_Rakia|my Cousin Rakia], my soul sista Connie Hilliard whose work illuminated the role of oral tradition and expressiveness in understanding culture and history; all of these amazing women prove to me that heroes surround us and only those with hearts to see will spot them.
The Storyteller:Keepers of WisdomThis image is from a limited edition print series called "The Storyteller" where i first began exploring the treasures of the oral tradition bequeathed by my Grandma Lottie and Aunt Yvette.
In more recent history i discovered soul sistas that have brought blessings and lessons, Irena Gapkovska Kerry Santo and Jenny Hsueh who never cease to amaze me with their insights, experience, kindness and tenacity. i haven't found the word for what Ron is just yet, colleague? Soul man? Soul brother? or Soul Source:Collaborator? friend? we have learned a great deal through this work. Jan. 2, 2009 update - Ron is a "Brother-Friend"
Pras ' work has been an interesting mirror of many of the ideas of interest to me. I have learned alot from how it shines through the lens of his expression.

The Projects in this Cultural_Fusion Art:Series will be implemented and developed with a Cultural_Fusion:Group core team: Organization:WebAntiphon Corporation will work with Organization:NGO_Art_Studio, Organization:Maak_Je_Geen_Zorgen, Organization:iFOSSF, and Organization:MacEachern_Associates. Humanity:Pras_Anandhas agreed to connect his work with Social Computer and Practical Utopia, as well as some other projects and ideas which will be developed and explored collaboratively. This team is also known as the Cultural_Fusion:Group and Fusion_Enlightenment_Group
I'd like to explore what these projects can offer to benefit Organization:NGO_Art_Studio and Amnesty International, the nonprofit organizations for which our activities will be fundraisers, and eventually other grassroots historical and arts initiatives including the Fairfield County Historical Preservation Initiative launched by "my Auntie", and The Millennium Campaign.
As some know Irena is a friend and fellow artists and i believe very much in her Studio's programs. Amnesty played a critical role in the awakening of my social conscious and because my family of origin and i have been raised primarily in South & North Carolina it is my "mixed bag" connection to my nation and the southeast region--- that i seek to make peace with in my own heart because attaining peace must always start with the one seeking it. See my powefulintentions_page to learn more about the role Amnesty International played in this story. Suffice it say my passion for championing human rights was ignited in powerful way, as was my desire to live a life that stands as a work of activist Performance rooted in love and compassion. It is for this reason that my entire Cultural_Fusion Art:Series will seek to advance and support The Millennium Campaign goals.
Human Rights NetworkToday, the 10th of December, people around the world are celebrating International Human Rights Day. States around the world are using this day to reaffirm their commitment to principles of universal human rights.
But here, in the US, most people don't know about this important anniversary. Although the United States played a major role in the writing and adopting of the UDHR 55 years ago, the US government does not promote Human Rights Day.
Do i mean YOU?
As you read the following, if you or someone you know is interested in participating as an Art:Artist or Project:Sponsor, contact me and we'll see what develops.
The first Project:Sponsor for this project is Organization:iFOSSF (International Free and Open Source Software Foundation) as the technical partner for carrying out the R&D for the media network required for Cultural_Fusion.
The Project Concept:
My rationale as an artist is that so many individuals and companies are immortalized because of the bad they do as artist use their names and logos in protest art, or writers and media give them free press denied so many worthy causes...this is in some respects, a protest to that kind of protest art and cultivate new avenues not dependent on mainstream media to diseminate or digest information. The goal here is to Immortalize and Celebrate those who support Peace instead of those that profit from war. This includes the artist that collaborate and the Organizations/Businesses that Project:Sponsor.
Also the mission is to ensure that as many as possible see the Art:Work without depending solely on the traditional media. We primarily utilize the Internet and word of mouth, to involve as many as possible in this as Performance:Art Source:Collaboration with others who want to show support for peace by helping to spread the word. This epitomizes my concept of "radical inclusion as a WebAntiphon:Clear_CRM_strategy".
If you support Peace, pass it on!
Project Guidelines:i will only establish the starting point, the collaborating Art:Artist will take the next steps within their realm of expertise to help develop a new fusion Art:Work.
In regard to censorship in art i'd like to direct you to Patti Smith's interview with Freemuse on this subject as she echoes my thoughts/feelings on the issue. Her life as an artist, feminist, global citizen, wife, and mother are inspirational for me as they provide a bit more insight about the path(s) to peace on both the personal and interpersonal levels.
Event One in Macedonia 2006
This 1st event will officially introduce the Cultual_Fusion Source:Collaboration series in support of the Millenium Development Goals
Visit the Event:Art_Peace_Day_One page to see the Press Release and invitation.
Another Little Peace 2007-2008The launch of this event has been altered due to delays with Hotel Infinity development.
The idea is to advance radical inclusion by making it easier for more people to participate in creating culture of peace now..not as some distant future to be left in the hands of politicians.
This means starting where we are at this moment. Despite the conflicts around us, peace always starts with the self...YOU. What can you do to move us forward...closer to peace? Consider how you can contribute to Art Peace, Day One...with more days of peace to follow.
The question i'd like to invite people to consider is this:
Forgiveness is to give up hope for a better past.
On September 21, 2007 I am asking you to use Twitter, Widgetbox, Clearspring , Jajah, Meebo, or Jaxtr to engage increasing numbers of people to forgive at least one person.
Event Two:Oral Tradition Integration
Event Two is the documentary inspired video created from the raw content being developed. This video series will be used in Installations and backdrop for Performance pieces.
Update July 2007:During the weeks of July 16th-27th 2007 we are volunteering at the history museum to assist to research and develop a contextual understanding for the history of Fairfield County. We are working on the oral history project being developed by my Aunt Yvette, which will seek to accurately include the history of those of African descent for the first time in this county. So far (6/22/07) we've (my children and i) worked along side my Aunt Yvette, history museum intern Markita Minger, and a talented artist, Michaela Brown, to install video/audio editing software, start to digitized the audio and image collections for the project, transferred the video to DVD, designed the brochure for the upcoming Catawba Native American exhibit, and assisted with some interviews. Collecting oral histories is no easy tasks as most of the people we've asked have declined. i can only wonder why. See blog post: What is Freedom?
However, this represents a firm start towards the online repository envisioned for this project. I envision it as an artistic collaboration to create a digital resource for the global community to study, analyze, contribute to and be enriched by.
July 27I have some mixed media work in development that has been inspired by this recent trip. It will be included in the exhibition that accompanies the perform piece below. It is the basis of the Installation that will provide the context for the Performance piece below that includes the visual art, Installation(s) and ICT as part of the artwork.
Event Three: Performance Peace- Our Story
Creation and Performance of a piece inspired by my family's history in South Carolina and the broader historical community context.
This is an example representing how the history of people from different cultural legacies are interconnected and sometimes clash. (click the Event:Three link above to view more about this project)
Demonstrating why historical preservation that includes multiple perspectives and experiences is vital to understanding the path followed to reach the present...and consideration of how it can honestly and progressively inform the future.
This piece will introduce the ICT system to create an online cultural repository within the envisioned 3D environment (as well as a more static form-based on the Phase1 site, for those with low speed connections). The result is intended to create a kind of online cultural museum and research center that is both a public service and a collaborative work of art.
Idea for exploration in the development of this project is the difference between heritage and culture.
Ending Slavery TodayThe artist doing this oral traditions Performance piece will be developed with and performed by Lorraine Stone of M'zume to create another Event in the States that will benefit the Fairfield County Preservation Initiative ICT project. This original piece will start with history and move into the present to educate and illuminate the Abolition movement today. Yes Anti-Slavery movements that end this practice are still needed today!
ICTech Inclusion
There is an IT component of this Project and one goal is to create an online repository as a unique Portfolio type function for nonprofit or community organizations that seek membership at Comfusion or Hotel_Infinity. This Historical Initiative will be the one for which these features and technologies are developed but once completed they'll be available for all at no cost for basic features. Organization:WebAntiphon Corporation is working with partners Organization:iFOSSF, and collaborating artists to manage the technical planning, development, implementation, technical support and maintenance to ensure free basice services for nonprofits and community groups.
The basic features will be designed to give the global community easy acess to historical and cultural information that would otherwise be lost. The emphasis is on inclusion of the previously excluded or under represented cultures in local and regional museums around the globe.
For example--the Storyteller painting was inspired by summer evenings at my Grandma Lottie's house on the front porch where she'd read various books to us. My favorite was The Negro Caravan which was full of old stories. My Grandma lived on Cemetery Street where there was an old graveyard hidden in the woods where some of our family are buried. Years later when my Auntie began collecting information on who was buried down there, because many of our ancestors were among them, she discovered that someone at the county office had burned the records. Apparently not seeing the value of retaining such information for one of the oldest, if not the oldest, "colored cemetery" in the county. That is now a wealth of historical information that predated the Civil War, lost...to create a dead end for those seeking to find and connect with their family history. This worsens the situation created by slavery that makes it extremely difficult to trace one's family lineage.
My goal is to create a repository that provides an alternative to local preservation institutions that continue to be tainted by the history of discrimination. This repository would be independent and ownership shared by the global community. Best of all it ensures that the valuable information my Auntie (and the others like her) have collected is preserved and easily shared with those seeking such to learn about local histories, including but not limited to oral histories.
There are a very limited number of resources for that region and history must not be revised by excluding important information that played vital role in shaping the community.
This project will create a solution to this problem for many others around the world that they can easily plug into and help create a virtual annex for other cultural and historical preservation resources, as well as a cultural portal for the global community. This is an innovative application of ICT to inclusively benefit historically oppressed groups and developing countries using an approach similar to that employed by wikipedia. Consider a future where history welcomes the voices of many to better inform understanding of complex realities.
Who benefits? The resulting product will benefit many, including Organization:NGO_Art_Studio and other Nonprofit and community organizations like it.
In addition to Private Business:Sponsorship we will apply research funding to the creation and maintence of this repository and eLearning portal to cover technical support cost, hosting, etc.
What is the next step in creating information and communication technology products that result in such a resource that is freely available?
MusicReggae, blues and jazz music are the perfect accompaniment to SoulFood experience and we look forward to exploring Fusion potential in the tradition of artist such as Bill Laswellin Bill Laswell: AXIOM SOUND SYSTEM. Can you help me reach Mr. Laswell at Innerhythmic?**
"Bill Laswell has been an innovator for three decades, fusing disparate genres into a new sound. Touching on everything from world beat, funk, rock, hip-hop, and jazz, his experimental approach has no limits."
Photos taken by Irena at the blues festival in Skopje Macedonia offer images that helped propel us towards our Project Source:Collaboration.

Sponsor BenefitsThis is only an introduction to Sponsorship Benefits!
When content from the event, including specific Art:Works, multimedia content, press releases, blogs, and discussions are uploaded and archived it can be co-branded with your company. You can be one of the Artist to collaborate to create an Art:Work.
Imagine your business or organization being credited as Creative_ContentSponsor depending on the type of Business:Sponsorship or Source:Collaboration opportunity that interest you.
Imagine actually sponsoring specific Art:Works by selecting a custom Business:Sponsorshippackage. For example, allowing you to provide a grant award for artist developing Art:Work to premier at the Event crediting your Business as the benefactor. Instead of displaying a plastic banner on the stage your logo is incorporated into a Multimedia Art:Work which employs the Internet as part of an Installation and Performance Art:Work for the Event.
